On May 31, 6 ranked Tucson Roller Derby Saddletramps hosted 10 ranked Bay Area Derby Girls B.A.D.Girls at Bladeworld in Tucson. This was a 2 30-minute period game being played under WFTDA 2.1.1 rules. There was an interesting crowd there tonight. I had met folks from Duke City, whom I had announced a bout for them out here last year. Also down from Las Vegas, is the Grand Poobah of Derby. There was also a silent auction taking place to help raise funds for the Saddletramps. This included things like artwork, certificates for local businesses, the original speed skates of Sloppy Flo as well as the infamous TRD smack-rack.

The first period starts with BADG getting the lead jam and the first three points of the game. The second jam is ended early by the refs as Bay Area's Sassy SlayHer gives us a scare as she goes down on the backstretch and did not get up quickly. Before the EMTs make it over there, she is back up on her skates and heading back to the bench. In jam 3, Bay Area jammer Grr Lee Burly does a dance move to get her way past Deadlock Doe to obtain lead jam. TRD's Two Bit Ore was not able to break, 8-0 Bay Area.

Saddletramps finally score in the 4th jam as Carrie Gunns helps Sami Automatic break through for lead jam. Sami picks up 4 points and calls the jam. Bay Area then dominates the next 4 jams scoring 17 points. In one of those jams Grr Lee Burly takes a hit and then flies down the outside backstretch trackline on one skate and manages to make lead jam. 25-4, Bay Area.

The next 3 jams were all about Tucson. Sloppy Flo, Sami Automatic and Two Bit Ore managed to score 13 points. In the latter jam, Two Bit Ore (known on her home team, The Copper Queens as Cheap Ore) had a wardrobe malfunction has her last button came unsnapped on her shirt but she was not busting out all over thanks to the bra she was wearing underneath. Bay Area jammer Racey Lane went into the box on that latter jam. 25-17, Bay Area.

Bay Area then dominates the next two jams. Racey Lane rips out of the box and flys through the pack for a lead jam and 4 points and in the next jam (jam 13), Grr Lee Burly manages to jam for 10 points while Tucson jammer Sloppy Flo encountered a substantial wall of white blockers. 39-17 Bay Area.

The next two jams were scoreless as the lead jammers (both TRD) were able to properly call off in time. In the first of those jams, Miss Moxxxie breaks from the pack first but is unable to make lead jam. 2 points were put on the scoreboard but then were eventually adjusted off.

In the last 4 jams of the first half, both teams got an equal number of lead jams but it was Bay Area that dominated in scoring. Bay Area scored 22 to Tucson's 6.

Score at halftime, 61-23 Bay Area in a total of 19 jams.

The second half starts with the Saddletramps bringing up Sloppy Flo to the line to go against Grr Lee Burly. Burly gets the lead and then calls as Flo starts going through the pack. Still 61-23, Bay Area.

Tucson would get a slight shot in the arm in the second jam as Bay Area jammer Racey Lane gets sent to the box for what appeared to be an elbow incident against Deadlock Doe. With Tumbleweed out as a solo jammer, she runs the entire two minutes and picks up a 9 point jam. 61-32, Bay Area.

In the third jam, Bay Area jammer Diane Rott breaks the pack but does not get lead jam. She eventually goes to the box along with Pia Mess. Despite this great opportunity for TRD, Polly Graff was not able to break, but Diane had done some damage before being whistled off. 64-32, Bay Area.

The 4th jam had a very contraversal call by the ref. In this jam, Tucson' Sami Automatic is solo-jamming while Diane Rott is serving out her penalty. 43 seconds into the jam, Tucson refs call Sami as lead jam. Dianne Rott eventually makes it out of the penalty box. As she passes through the pack, BADG ref Math Mortician calls her as lead jam and she eventuall calls off the jam.

The Tucson point drought continues on for the next 5 jams in this period, Bay Area picks up 23 points. A lot of this domination can be attributed to the interesting blocking techniques of Bay Area including a couple of good moves involving backwards skating. In the last of these jams, Sami Automatic goes to the box and allows Bay Area's Grr Lee Burly to pick up an 11 point jam, the best jam all night. It's now 87-32, Bay Area.

Sloppy Flo picks up two points in the next jam but then is answered in the jam after that by Racey Lane. 89-34, Bay Area. In the following jam, Kitt Turbo sneaks by Whiskey Mick to pick up lead jam, but does not score. In that jam, ref Roman Johnson some how or another had lost his balance and went flying on the skate floor landing butt first in turn-4. He was OK. Bay Area scores another 7 points over the next 4 jams bringing the score to 96-34 with just over a minute remaining.

Final jam with about 1:14 remaining, a little bit of jammer on jammer action took place as Bay Area jammer Miss Moxxxie did a very interesting sidestep in front of Tumbleweed. Tumbleweed manages to break and get lead jam, but the 5 points in that jam was just not enough.

In the second half, Bay Area scored 35 points to Tucson's 19.

Final Score: 96-39, Bay Area Derby Girls. Nobody purchased the smack rack.

In other Arizona derby action, the Surly Gurlies beat the Brawlarinas by a score of 74-60 in AZRD's semi-final bout. The Surlys will play the Bad News Beaters in the championship bout on June 14.

Hi Michi-chan,

Your jam by jam summary got a little off track.
In the 1st half's 18th jam Tumbleweed got 4 points to Miss Moxxxie's 4 points.
Then the 19th jam was Two-Ore was 1 point to Kitt Turbo's 9 points.
The first jam of the second half was a 0-0 jam for Sloppy Flo and Grr Lee Burly.
After that you're back on track.

I went back and reviewed the video again and was able to confirm your corrections. Most of the time, I will keep the video running and then about 7-10 after a jam is blown read the scoreboard data (scores and time).. if the scoreboard op is slow (which did happen a couple of times that night), I may miss something.

Again, thanks for the corrections.
