Arizona Derby Dames (AZDD)

Arizona Derby Dames (AZDD)

Founded in 2005 after a league split from AZRD, AZDD has become the state's largest and most resilient derby league. During its flat track days, going to an AZDD bout was a great fan experience loaded with "extended take downs", themed teams, artistic surroundings, loud crowds and an overall good time.  After 5 seasons of flat track roller derby, with the fifth season at the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum (the "Madhouse on McDowell", former home of the Phoenix Suns), AZDD fulfilled one of the league's original goals, to become a banked track league.  Their Season 6 banked track debut at the Coliseum attracted an attendance of nearly 4,500 fans, shattering all attendance records for modern roller derby in Arizona.  Today, the league hosts bouts throughout most of the year including the Chingadera and other tournaments on the banked track in their own home, the Hall of Dames.

AZRD was Arizona's first derby league, founded in 2003.  AZRD's first bouts were "no rules".  As the game started to gain structure and derby leagues were agreeing to rules (which would eventually become WFTDA 1.0), two groups of skaters would split from AZRD including what would become the Arizona Renegade Rollergirls and then Arizona Derby Dames.  In 2007, several skaters would split from AZRD and form their own independent team called the Arizona Bruisers. They would later be the Phoenix City Rollers and then would fade away into derby history.

Arizona Rollergirls (AZRG)

AZRG was formed in 2010 near the end of the Michi-chan era.  After the 2020 crud, the league had restructured and is still active to this day with two home teams, which are shuffled each month between the roster players.  Like the former flat track AZDD, AZRG does have some tolerance for "extended take downs".

Phoenix Roller Derby

Originally started in 2009 as Desert Dolls Roller Derby (DDRD), this league was created in part during the time when Arizona Derby Dames (AZDD) was making the transition to banked track and was the place where the tradition of the classic Arizona ruleset was played and a place for former AZDD skaters who wanted to keep skating flat track.  Michi-chan Roller Sports Productions did provide start-up consulting and support to this league.  Michi-chan also did bout announcing for a couple of their earliest bouts.

In 2022, DDRD changed their name to Phoenix Roller Derby to better align themselves with their values of being gender inclusive.

Renegade Riots of Tucson

Renegade Riots of Tucson

Originally started around 2011 as the Renegade Rollergirls of Tucson.  Once an active derby league, the league appears to have been impacted by the 2020 Crud, like many other leagues.  In 2023, RROT remerged from the Crud, changed their name to Renegade Riots of Tucson in order to be more inclusive and appeared to have held a bout.  In 2025, the league still appears to be active and is recruiting..

Status: Active and reforming.
Ruleset/Association: Renegade (no penalties)
Current Venue: TBD

Tucson Derby Brats

Founded in 2006, the Derby Brats was the very first roller derby program for skaters under the age of 18.  Not far afterwards, other "derby brat" programs would start to launch in other cities, such as in Seattle.  The Derby Brats would make their debut in Austin in 2007.  In those very early days, Michi-chan Roller Sports Productions embraced and covered the Tucson Derby Brats.  In fact, the first Michi-chan video that was ever released for a league other than Arizona Derby Dames was for the Tucson Brats.

Sparked by the derby brat programs in Tucson and Seattle, the Junior Flat Track Derby Association would be formed in 2007 and in 2008, it would become what we now know as the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA), which has member leagues in various places around the world.  Remember, it all started in Arizona.

Status: Active - Junior derby
Ruleset/Association: JRDA
Venue: Eric Michael Ogden Skate Park, 1702 N Palo Verde Blvd., Tucson, AZ

Tucson Roller Derby

Originally a "team" on Arizona Roller Derby (AZRD) out of Phoenix, TRD would be founded in 2003.  During its peak, it had as many as 4 home teams (Copper Queens, Iron Curtain, Vice Squad and the Furious Truckstop Waitresses). The Michi-chan camera spent a lot of time in Tucson and at the time, Tucson fans really loved their derby!  Since the 2020 crud, the league went through a significant decline and many members went to pursue other passions.  Today, TRD still has more than a pulse and they have been competing.  They are in the process of recruiting and hoping to have a second team (a B team) up and running.

Status: Active
Ruleset/Association: WFTDA (charter member through AZRD)
Travel Teams: (A) Javelina Havoc, (B) TBD
Current Venue: The league is looking for a permanent home. There is at least one 2025 bout planned for the Pima County Fairgrounds.
