On January 19, it was a very chilly night at Casey At The Bat. So chilly that some skaters were warming up and even bouting wearing bandannas and other items to cover their faces. Fans were also very cold and we had noticed a declining number of fans as the night progressed despite the excitement of this bout. It was so cold, I dropped and slightly damaged my camera between the second and third periods. This bout is the first full derby bout in Arizona for 2008 and it is the make-up for the January 5 bout that was rained out.

The first period starts with C Duktive jamming for the Brawlarinas and Domiskatrix jamming for the Surly Gurlies. The Bralwarinas go right out on front with a grand slam in the first jam for C Duk. Later in the period, Hacker Too Pieces would lap Gratutious Violet for another Brawla grand slam. Both teams showed some very solid blocking and at the end of the first period, the score was tied at 20.

In the second period, C Duk has the first jam for the Brawlas and she very creatively breaks the pack and then comes around again for another grand slam. For the Brawlas, we see the first bouts for several Smash Squad skaters including Carnal Apples and the very powerful Goldie Fingered. The Brawlas really pump up the volume with a 12 point jam by French Lyck with 9 minutes remaining in the second period taking the score to 47-26. With about 5 minutes to go in the second period, Goldie Fingered jamming solo makes a penalty while the Surly jammer was still in the box. This results in a reset of the jam with Hacker Too Pieces taking on Domiskatrix with a short pack and Domiskatrix picks up the lead jam. When the period was over, the Surlys were only able to score 8 points while the Brawlas were able put 43 points on the board. At the end of two, 63-28 Brawlas.

The third period is the time for the Surlys to try to strike back. In the second jam of the period, Shirley Demise had a grand slam and a few more to stack-up 7 more points for the pirates. Later on in the period, Shirley would go down in the backstretch requiring the attention of the EMTs. While Doc and Bones were attending to her, fans were entertained to Diabolique of the Bad News Beaters shakin' her booty for the crowd. Shirley was helped back to the Surly bench. She was moving around the bench area on her skates a few minutes later. Before the bout was restarted, Trish The Dish in the role of a ref entertained everyone by doing the "worm" in the infield. When the action started again, Hacker Too Pieces of the Brawlas was taking on Gratitoious Violet of the Surlys. Violet gets the lead jam and promptly calls it off. The bout ends with a final jam between C Duk and Domiskatrix, but the 40 seconds left on the clock was not enough to do much and the Brawlarinas win their first game of the season beating the Surly Gurlies 77-65.

This temporarily puts the Brawlarinas in first place pending the next bout involving the Bad News Beaters. If the Beaters win their next bout, they will go back into first place based on points.

The next AZRD bout is the February 2 bout that was originally supposed to be between the Bruisers and the Beaters. Due to the recent developments regarding the members of the Bruisers, the AZDR has not heard what the nature of the next bout will be or if a new team is being established and if that team will carry the record of the October bout against the Brawlarinas.

AZRD has also confirmed in their bout program that on May 3, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls will be visiting Phoenix to take on AZRD's Tent City Terrors.
