AZRD announces a new tiered membership level structure

Arizona Roller Derby has announced through their Facebook group of a new membership structure for the league. Under the new 4 level system, those who are interested in joining AZRD can either work their way through the level system if they are female and wish to eventually play WFTDA roller derby or stay at certain levels based on their desire to skate non-contact for fitness reasons.

The new levels are as follows:

The Community Membership will be for those who do not wish to skate. Community Members may include those who are involved in bout operations including production assistance, statisticians and non-skating referees. There are no membership dues with this level of membership in AZRD.

The Fitness Membership level are for those who wish to skate but who do not wish to participate in the contact aspect of roller derby. Any female skater aspiring to be on a WFTDA team will be a Fitness Member until she completes her fall training. They may also perform the duties of a Community Member. Fitness Members pay $20 in monthly dues.

The Smash Squad is comprised of skaters who have demonstrated that they can fall correctly and would like to participate in the full contact aspect of roller derby. Skaters may choose to remain on Smash Squad or be drafted to a WFTDA team once the skater meets minimum skills. Smash Squad skaters may participate in league practices, public scrimmages and expositions. They will participate in pre-bout demonstrations, halftime presentations and if there are enough members, full bouts. Smash Squad members pay $40 in monthly dues.

WFTDA Members are those skaters who have met minimum standards for full contact skaters and have been drafted to a home team and/or a travel team. WFTDA members also pay $40 in monthly dues.

This new membership system appears to be unique in some ways especially in the aspsect where a skater may choose to stay in Smash Squad as well as increases the awareness of the other non-skating and skating (non-contact) opportunities in AZRD.
