A good friend and I took in the Arizona Derby Dames bout on May 10. This was a bout that I promoted as a "Michi-chan MUST SEE" event and the "DD" in AZDD should mean "Dames Delivered". Now, I know that I did wrong by my friends on the Brutal Beauties to make the decision to wear my Scrapper skirt that night. But then again, I predicted the Scrappers to win (I will talk more about that later). Anyway, Red Rocker decides take things into her own hands and decides to take out a derby fan, me. Well honestly, Rocker and I planned this and it made a good show. We did this last year but unfortunately, no one caught it. This year, we got it and it's all over YouTube.
Now the first bout was the #3 Brutal Beauties against the #1 School Yard Scrappers. We saw a pretty intense bout by both of these teams. I was expecting a very low margin game (low point-spread), but for some reason, the Beauties took a commanding lead and never looked back. It was already 57-25 Beauties by the half. The bout ended with a wild score of 109-49 Beauties. Now, I originally predicted the Scrappers to win. This prediction was made before the season started. This prediction did take into consideration that the Scrappers have Chuck Berrings playing for them. As we have reported, Chuck is no longer skating for AZDD. Interestingly enough, Chuck was declared the MVP for the March 1 bout against the Bombshells.
The second bout was what we promoted as "The Wrath of Thrash". This was the bout between The Runaway Brides and the Coffin Draggers. The Brides were at full strength and then some for the bout. Meanwhile, the Draggers continue to suffer with injuries including that of team captain Dolly De Los Muertos. Dolly hopes to slowly start skating this week and if everything goes well, she should be bouting soon. I am pulling for her and hope she does not require any more surgery. The Draggers did the best they could out there. As you know from our reports, they are traditionally a low scoring team. In the second half, we saw the return of Suzy Homewrecker who came into several jams as a blocker or pivot. There were several extended takedowns in this bout including an incredible one at the final jam. The Brides preval, 96-43.
Rankings do not change after this bout. It's still (1) Scrappers, (2) Runaway Brides, (3) Brutal Beauties, (4) Coffin Draggers and (5) Bombshells. While the Scrappers, Brides and Beauties have some kind of a playoff contention, the fourth seed still needs to be determined.
Coming up for the Dames is a demo bout at University of Phoenix Stadium at 4:00PM on Saturday 5/17 during the body art show taking place there. Check out derby and boxing at that time.
The open skate at the Castle Sports Club scheduled for May 17 has been canceled.
The next AZDD bout will be on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Castle Sports Club in Phoenix. It will be the Runaway Brides taking on the Brutal Beauties. Then we will see the Bombshells vs. the Coffin Draggers. Doors open at 7PM and the bout starts at 8PM. www.azderbydames.com
