Editor's Note: This was an April Fools prank.
In light of the recent news that Arizona Roller Derby (AZRD) will be sharing the Castle Sports Club with Arizona Derby Dames (AZDD), both leagues will be making a joint announcement later today, April 1, 2008 that a very long awaited exhibition bout between AZRD's Tent City Terrors and the AZDD's Lady Lux will take place on August 23, the date that is currently set as the AZDD Lady Lux demo bout.
The August 23 bout date was originally going to be used for the Lady Lux to take on the Phoenix City Rollers (PCR) in a demo bout. Since the dissolution of the PCR, representatives from AZRD have decided to the past behind them and have agreed that a demo bout between the best skaters on AZRD and AZDD would be good idea.
Coach Pauly of AZRD, who normally does not make statements to the AZDR was very excited about this upcoming bout told the AZDR that he has been working towards getting the TCTs back up to single digit rankings and that a bout against the aggressive Lady Lux team may be exactly the workout that the new TCTs need. He later states that "the fans have been saying that they want more derby. Well, here it is."
AZDD founder Suzy Homewrecker told the AZDR that she hopes that the bout will expose fans of each league to the other league.
According to information obtained by the AZDR, the bout will be played under more loosened street rules without the rigid penalty requirements of WFTDA 2.1.1 but still in the spirit of some of those rules. From information received at the AZDR, AZDD head ref Oliver Klozhov has been training his refs on spotting penalties and being more aggressive on penalty enforcement. We have seen a result of this increased penalty enforcement at the most recent AZDD bout between the Runaway Brides and Bombshells as well as the School Yard Scrappers against the Coffin Draggers.
The last time AZDD played under such rules was last year at Rollercon in Las Vegas where they suffered a substantial loss to the Midwest Threat.
Final details including distribution of the take as well as the potential of a beergarden are still being worked out by both leagues. More details will follow as we get closer to the bout date.
