On Wednesday (October 29, 2025), a fire that started outside caused serious damage to the roof of the warehouse used as the primary venue for Angel City Derby, located at 785 E. 14th Pl. in Los Angeles. The fire was first reported at 8:16AM. When crews from Los Angeles City Fire Department arrived, they indicated that smoke was showing from the roof. Firefighters went into an offensive mode and saw fire showing through the hole that they cut in the roof. LAFD dispatched apparatus from four fire stations and the hazardous materials team. The fire was knocked down 16 minutes later. LAFD crews prevented the fire from spreading to other areas of the structure or to adjacent buildings.
There was an Arizona connection to this because Angel City was planning to hold the Calaveras Clash round robin tournament on Saturday (November 1, 2025). This was going to be a 5 game tournament featuring the Shore Shots and Rocket Queens from Angel City, The Cuttlefish and Kraken from So Cal Derby, Calsquad and the Whiskey Row-llers from Prescott's Northern Arizona Roller Derby.
Angel City has set up a GoFundMe to help raise $20,000 to help with the restoration efforts. As of this writing, over $3,300 has already been raised.
The world has given us a lot of tough knocks. The 2020 Crud was the most extreme example of that. Derby is resilient. If we can make it through something like the Crud, Angel City can definitely rebound from this. Please do your part. No matter how small. Of course, if there's anything the Michi can do to help, please by all means, let me know! I lived a good portion of my life in Southern California. Even though I am on the east coast now, both the Los Angeles and Phoenix areas are my true emotional homes. We will get through this. As always, derby love from your Michi.
