April's Arizona Derby Doings
April is one of the quietest months for derby here in Arizona. However, there are some things that are going on.
April is one of the quietest months for derby here in Arizona. However, there are some things that are going on.
Last Sunday, I was invited to come down to an old warehouse in Downtown Phoenix to watch the Renegade Rollergirls put on a bout at their new practice location. This bout, being put on for a by-invitation-only audience, was also being recorded by a major sports network for a documentary on alternative sports. Renegades came in from all of their sister leagues including Orange County, San Diego and Bend, OR.
HEY ARIZONA DERBY FANS!!!!!
We have been doing pretty good this year with the predictions. Let's do some for the rest of this month in Arizona derby!!
TONIGHT - TUCSON ROLLER DERBY
IRON CURTAIN VS. VICE SQUAD - 2 pretty equal teams but I was very impressed with the IC at the last bout and I think they will have a slight edge. IRON CURTAIN BY LESS THAN 10 in a medium scoring (50-80) game.
In Tucson, it was the opener of Tucson Roller Derby's season #5. In the first bout, The Copper Queens without star jammer Cheap Ore was able to manage to defeat the Iron Curtain 87-69. In the second bout, the Furious Truckstop Waitresses, who was also skating short was able to use a jammer rotation of primarily Sloppy Flo and Peaches Rodriguez to trample Whiskey Mick and Vice Squad with a final score of 95-46.
(Updated: to adjust final score.)
On Saturday, February 16, 2008, you could feel the walls of Bladeworld vibrating for about a quarter mile around because of what was going on inside.
This was the rivalry that pits the #4 ranked Texas Rollergirls (TXRG) Texecutioners against the #6 ranked Tucson Roller Derby (TRD) Saddletramps. The last time these two teams met was in December, 2006 and in that bout, Tucson beats Texas 62-60 in overtime.
The Arizona Derby Report has been made aware of several derby related events taking place in both Phoenix and Tucson. With the timing of these events, it is possible for the hardcore derby fan to attend all of them.
The AZDR will be at these events, which we are billing as the "Arizona Derby Love Weekend".
(corrected to add missing jam)
On Saturday January 19, operating under their newly formed corporation, the Arizona Bruisers Roller Derby team have played their first public scrimmage against the Copper Queens of Tucson Roller Derby at a somewhat nippy Casey at the Bat.
The Copper Queens brought a short roster to Phoenix including Ferocious Oxide, Lavender Pitt, Dirty Teri, Cheap Ore, Kay Boom, Venus Dynamite, Blue Mauli and Pixie Axe.
Today in the Phoenix area, there are two exiciting roller derby events taking place.
Before that, we must mention that the RENEGADE ROLLERGIRLS have postponed their park demo bout "until further notice". Therefore, they will not be skating today.
BRUISER NATION SCRIMMAGE BETWEEN:
THE ARIZONA BRUISERS and
(TUCSON ROLLER DERBY) COPPER QUEENS
CASEY AT THE BAT (40TH ST-UNION HILLS)
4PM - INFORMAL SCRIMMAGE - OPEN - LIMITED SEATING
The AZDR has been informed of a time change for the upcoming BruiserNation scrimmage between the Arizona Bruisers and Tucson Roller Derby's Copper Queens.
The new start time is 4PM. We do note that time directly conflicts with the Renegade Rollergirls Demo Bout at Coronado Park in Phoenix, which is scheduled at the same time.
The AZDR will continue to cover the BruiserNation scrimmage as originally scheduled.
